You may know me as Aunty Christine—your go-to gal for backyard shenanigans, and strong opinions served with a wink and a smile. But did you know I’m also a legally ordained minister?
Yep. In 2018, I became a wedding officiant through the Universal Life Church (ULC)—and it all started with my nephew.
He was planning to get married at the courthouse. Simple, no fuss. But when I heard the news, I had one of those Aunty Christine-style lightning bolt moments and said, “You’re not getting married by some stranger behind a desk… I’ll marry you!”
And just like that, I was off to the internet to figure out how.
The First Wedding I Ever Performed
I got ordained through ULC in about five minutes. No joke. I filled out the online form, confirmed my information, and boom—Minister Christine was born. I even ordered the little ID card that says “Minister” on the front, because you know I had to show up official.
Their ceremony ended up being one of the sweetest things I’ve ever done. It was simple, intimate, and full of love. I wrote the script myself (with a few personal touches and a pinch of sass), and when I pronounced them married, I felt something I didn’t expect—like I had just been part of something sacred.
That feeling never really left.
Since Then…
I’ve gone on to officiate all kinds of weddings:
Non-religious ceremonies in backyards, at my house on my lunch break, and in cozy little venues filled with fairy lights and laughter. Spiritual and religious weddings with custom prayers and family blessings. LGBTQ+ weddings that made my heart explode with joy, glitter, and pride. Big weddings, small elopements, last-minute courthouse alternatives—you name it.
And every single one has reminded me why I do this. Love is beautiful in all its forms, and it deserves to be honored in a way that’s meaningful to you, not just some cookie-cutter script.
Want to Get Ordained? Here’s How:
If you’re thinking about doing this yourself—maybe for a friend, a sibling, or even just for the good karma—it’s easier than you think.
Go to www.ulc.org This is the official Universal Life Church site. (Watch out for copycats.) Click “Get Ordained” It’s a short form with your name, email, and state. You’ll be ordained instantly, and yes—it’s legal in most U.S. states. Check Your Local Marriage Laws Some counties/states require extra paperwork (like a letter of good standing). ULC offers these for a small fee. Order the Extras (Optional but Fun) I recommend getting their starter wedding kit or at least an official certificate. You’ll feel more prepared, especially for your first time.
Start with Someone You Love
Officiating is a big responsibility—but it’s also a big honor. Starting with a loved one’s wedding, like I did, makes it all the more special.
Real Talk: Why It Matters
Being a minister isn’t about having all the answers or standing on some kind of moral mountain. It’s about showing up for people during one of the most important moments in their life and helping them mark it in a way that’s authentic and unforgettable.
If you’re the kind of person who believes in love, who loves storytelling, and who can keep a straight face even when the groom blurts out something hilarious (it happened once, bless his heart)—then I promise you, you’ve got what it takes.
Final Blessing from Aunty Christine
Whether you’re thinking of becoming a minister or just curious how someone like me ended up with that title—it’s all part of the bigger adventure. And if you ever need help writing vows, calming pre-wedding nerves, or finding a sparkly officiant outfit, well, you know where to find me.
Because love is real, y’all. And it deserves to be celebrated with heart, humor, and a whole lot of “heck yes.”
Now go forth,
Minister of Love. 💍
Aunty Christine
