Hello, my beauties! Today, I want to talk about something that has been a significant part of my journey lately: perimenopause.
Perimenopause is the phase leading up to menopause, where our bodies begin to transition and hormone levels fluctuate. It’s like puberty’s older, sassier sister who shows up uninvited and brings along a suitcase full of surprises. From hot flashes to mood swings, it’s a rollercoaster ride that many of us weren’t quite prepared for.
My Personal Journey
When I first started experiencing symptoms, I thought it was just stress or maybe I was coming down with something. I was waking up drenched in sweat, forgetting why I walked into a room, and feeling emotions more intensely than ever before. It wasn’t until I did some research and spoke with my doctor that I realized I was entering perimenopause.

Starting over at 47 is challenging enough, but adding perimenopause into the mix felt overwhelming. I was trying to rebuild my life, find my purpose, and now I had to navigate these physical and emotional changes as well. But here’s the thing: acknowledging what was happening to my body gave me a sense of empowerment. I wasn’t losing my mind; I was going through a natural transition that many women experience.
Coping Strategies
I’ve found that certain lifestyle changes have made a significant difference in managing my symptoms:
Regular Exercise: Incorporating physical activity into my routine has helped improve my mood and energy levels. Balanced Diet: Eating a diet rich in whole foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats has supported my overall well-being. Mindfulness Practices: Practicing meditation and deep-breathing exercises has been beneficial in managing stress and anxiety. Medical Consultation: Discussing symptoms with my doctor led to exploring treatment options like hormone therapy and non-hormonal alternatives.

Navigating the Emotional Landscape
Perimenopause isn’t just a physical transition; it’s an emotional journey as well. I’ve found myself experiencing mood swings that come out of nowhere—feeling elated one moment and tearful the next. It’s like being on an emotional rollercoaster without a clear reason. Understanding that these mood changes are linked to hormonal fluctuations has been crucial. I’ve learned to be gentle with myself during these times, allowing space for these emotions without judgment.
The Importance of Sleep
Sleep disturbances have been one of the more challenging aspects of perimenopause for me. Waking up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, and struggling to fall back asleep became a regular occurrence. These night sweats disrupted my rest and left me feeling exhausted during the day. Implementing a calming bedtime routine, reducing caffeine intake, and keeping the bedroom cool have helped improve my sleep quality. While it’s not perfect, these changes have made a noticeable difference.

Seeking Support and Building Community
One of the most empowering steps I’ve taken is connecting with other women going through similar experiences. Sharing stories, tips, and simply knowing I’m not alone has been incredibly comforting. Whether it’s through local support groups, online forums, or casual conversations with friends, these connections have provided a sense of solidarity and understanding that I deeply value.
Perimenopause has taught me the importance of self-awareness and self-care. It’s a time of change, but also an opportunity to reconnect with myself and prioritize my well-being. By acknowledging the challenges and actively seeking ways to manage them, I’ve found a renewed sense of strength and resilience. This journey, while unexpected, has become a path of personal growth and empowerment.
Embracing the Transition
Perimenopause has taught me to listen to my body and prioritize self-care. It’s a reminder that change, while challenging, can also be an opportunity for growth. I’ve learned to be patient with myself, to seek support when needed, and to celebrate the small victories along the way.
Starting over at 47, with all its ups and downs, has been a journey of rediscovery. Perimenopause is just one part of that journey, and while it brings its own set of challenges, it also offers a chance to connect more deeply with ourselves and with each other.
To all the women out there navigating this phase of life: you’re not alone. Let’s continue to share our stories, support one another, and embrace the beautiful complexity of midlife.
With love,
Aunty Christine 🫶🏻💜🤘🏻
