Music has always been more than just background noise for me—it’s a form of expression, a way to process emotions, and sometimes, the only thing that truly understands what I’m feeling. And when it comes to finding music that hits me on a deep, personal level, nothing does it quite like metalcore.
I didn’t always listen to heavier music. In fact, my love for alternative and rock started thanks to my friend, Amy. As teenagers, she introduced me to bands like Depeche Mode with a little more edge, and a whole lot of raw emotion. From that moment on, I was hooked. And while my taste in music has grown and evolved, one thing has remained constant—my love for heavy, emotionally charged music.

Why Metalcore Sticks With Me
There’s something special about metalcore. The combination of crushing instrumentals, melodic choruses, and raw, often deeply personal lyrics makes it a genre that resonates with me like no other.
✔ The Emotion is Real – A lot of metalcore music explores themes of struggle, loss, resilience, and self-discovery. These songs don’t just scratch the surface—they dive deep into emotions that aren’t always easy to talk about. There have been so many times when I’ve listened to a song and thought, Wow, they get it. Bands like The Amity Affliction, I Prevail, and Architects write lyrics that are raw, honest, and often hit me right where it matters.

✔ The Energy is Unmatched – Whether I’m in the car, working, or just needing a pick-me-up, metalcore has the kind of intensity that wakes me up and fuels me. The mix of heavy breakdowns and soaring clean vocals keeps things dynamic and never boring. Spiritbox is a perfect example—Courtney LaPlante’s vocals are hauntingly beautiful one second and absolutely brutal the next.
✔ The Lyrics Hit Hard – Some of my favorite bands write lyrics that feel like they were pulled straight from my own thoughts. The way metalcore blends aggression with vulnerability is something I connect with deeply. The Amity Affliction, in particular, has a way of writing about mental health and personal battles in a way that feels deeply personal yet universally relatable.

A Lifelong Love for Heavy Music
It all started with those early introductions to alternative and rock, but over the years, my love for heavier music has only grown stronger. From The Amity Affliction to I Prevail, Architects, Spiritbox, and so many others, I’ve found a home in music that isn’t afraid to be raw, real, and intense.
For me, metalcore is more than just music—it’s a connection, an outlet, and a constant reminder that I’m not alone in how I feel. And that’s something I’ll never stop appreciating.
What about you? Do you have a genre or band that speaks to you on a deep level? I’d love to hear about it!
